Give Me that Mayo (Clinic)

After waiting for five months, I finally had my first consultation at Mayo Clinic for chronic pain. Based on the aggressive treatment, efficiency and quality of patient care, there is no question why Mayo has earned such a fantastic reputation.

Here’s a summary of what has transpired so far:
11.02.09: Neurological consultation
Cervical flexion x-rays with radiologist report within 30 minutes
Neurologist report after radiologist’s findings
11.03.09: Pain psychology consultation
11.04.09: Physiatry consultation
11.24.09: Pain psychology return visit
11.27.09: Physical therapy assessment
12.01.09: Physical therapy

There’s more to my treatment than a simple chronology, including the rest of my treatment schedule, but it’s noteworthy I had cervical x-rays not even one hour after my neurological consultation and the rapidity of each physician’s progress concerning my treatment.

If you have chronic pain and have been or are being treated by Mayo, please share your experience.

Park Place: A Review

Located in the heart of Riverside at 931 King St., Park Place has evolved over the years: new drink specials, bartenders and outdoor patio space. If one has been to the Bourbon Pub in New Orleans, Park Place could qualify as the appropriately-sized counterpart for Jacksonville.

Park Place is at the corner of King and Post, across from Walkers wine bar, in a conspicuously red building with “Park Place” in neon green lighting. The side of the bar that fronts the small parking lot still accepts drive-thru orders for unopened items. The tradition is carried over from when the building that houses Park Place used to be a package store.

An Experience at InCahoots

InCahoots, located in the Brooklyn neighborhood between Riverside/Five Points and Lavilla/Downtown, is located at 711 Edison Avenue. Previously the Third Dimension (3D) in the 1990s, InCahoots has been undergoing a revival of the gay nightlife scene and the growing crowds serve as a testament to its success.

InCahoots is not as large as the multi-room flagship club Metro, but the atmosphere, clientele and drink specials set it apart as a venue worthy of visiting. A small parking lot is available for possibly 20 vehicles, but a new fenced-in lot one block away is now available. Club staff direct visitors to the parking lot and remain for the remainder of the night to provide safety escorts.

Alert Notification – Burglary

Wednesday, September 9, 2009, one apartment of a duplex on the 2500 block of Post was burglarized at approximately 10 am. Entrance was through the back alley and through a wooden privacy fence gate that is typically latched but was open. Entrance to the apartment was through the back window that may have been unlocked. A laptop and cash and change were reported stolen.

At the time of the burglary, a neighbor was working in the front yard next door and the tenant of the other apartment of the duplex was home. Both heard noises but did not believe anything out of the ordinary was occurring. No suspects were witnessed.

JSO was alerted and responded within 30 minutes. If you have any information regarding the burglary, please contact JSO at 630-0500.

Alert Notification – Assault – Week of 9.06.09

Alert Notification – Assault, Property Damage

At approximately 7:30 PM during the week of September 6, 2009, a resident of an apartment on the 2600 block of Post, near King, was assaulted on the well-lit front porch of the building. At the time, the resident was using a laptop when an African-American male, possibly 18 years old, approached the victim and asked for change. The victim did not have any change and, upon learning of such, the assailant attempted to forcefully take possession of the laptop.

The victim regained possession of the laptop when the assailant punched the victim in the face, resulting in a bloody nose. The laptop was damaged in the process.

The victim did not call JSO; rather, JSO was emailed with an account of the incident and has not followed up with the victim.

Please be careful when resisting relinquishing control of property as these situations can quickly escalate and result in physical harm.

If you have any information regarding the assault, please contact JSO at 630-0500.

Friday, September 4, 2009, a house on Dellwood undergoing renovations was burglarized. Entrance was through the crawl space under the house. Beer and soda cans and fast food wrappers were found inside the house.

Approximately $20,000 worth of items, such as ladders, paint and other materials used for home repairs and renovations, were reported stolen.

Based on the litter found, JSO believes this burglary most likely involved neighbors or those who are aware the house is empty. No suspects were observed.

If you have any information regarding the burglary, please contact JSO at 630-0500.

Neurostimulation Procedure for Cervical Injury

Does anyone have any information or has received neurostimulation therapy for chronic pain? My anesthesiologist is recommending this in lieu of RFs.

The risks of paralysis and death would certainly interfere with their “Tame the pain” line, but if it’s a small enough risk, I am willing to explore it.

Oh, the migraines started because I was rear-ended by a drunk driver.

If you drink and drive, STOP.

The Law of Attraction and Homeownership

For a few years, I have been wanting to buy the duplex I have lived in since May 2005, but pesky negative thoughts consumed me. Not too long ago, I printed out pictures of the duplex and look at it every day when I wake up and envision my name on the mortgage, my name on the Property Appraiser’s website, my name on everything having to do with the property.

Not much changed for one month until I met Will, a loan officer who allayed my concerns. I believe he can make this happen for me.

So, for all you skeptics out there, read or watch “The Secret” or any topic dealing the law of attraction. It is up to you to decide what you want and whether your negative thoughts will get in the way of receiving what you want.

JASMYN Open House Tour | 9.10.09, 6-8 PM

JASMYN, the Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth Network, is hosting an open house and networking event on Thursday, September 10, from 6-8 pm. I am a JASMYN graduate, having first attended in 1994 when I felt like I was the only gay person on the planet.

Remember Tom Hanks in “Cast Away” removed from civilization and human interaction? That’s how I felt.

I credit much of my self-acceptance to JASMYN for I received support in a safe environment. I have also developed close friendships that have endured for nearly half my life–15 years and still going!

Learn about JASMYN’s new mission, youth services and upcoming events while light refreshments are served.

Also take advantage of this networking opportunity as the Open House is geared towards LGBT professionals and small businesses.

How to RSVP?
Email Cindy Watson or Natalie Nguyen by September 8.

Spread the word and promote equality for all, especially our youth.

Yelp Review | 13 Gypsies

If you’re on Yelp, you just might be a foodie who wants something unique, a meal that can’t be had at 1,424 other locations across the country.  I still enjoy a Chinese all you can eat buffet as my belly will attest.

When you’re in the mood for an intimate restaurant, personal culinary touches and delicious tapas, head to the corner of College and Stockton, 887 Stockton exactly.  I now offer you my Yelp review of 13 Gypsies in Riverside.

When you think 13 Gypsies, three words should come to mind: Tapas, quality, and ambiance.

I had a terrible day at work and wanted dinner that would help me forget about the horrible condition of our financial markets, the ubiquitous doom and gloom delivered by the media and my employer trying to extract from me 60-80 hours of productivity in 40 hours.

13 Gypsies was just the answer on this cold night.

Having experienced tapas in town and in other cities, this is truly a gem in Jacksonville.  The reason it was great is the conversation was wonderful and we ordered each tapa based on our mood at the time.  It also helped our table was tucked in the corner with a view of Stockton and College to observe what was happening outside from the inside.

Amazonia in Riverside | Clean up the Alleys

Jacksonville, not the Amazon

Jacksonville, not the Amazon

One day I decided to be adventurous and hop into my fuel-efficient car to explore the alleys in my part of Riverside.  They can be hard to spot if you don’t pay attention as the entrances are not marked and are in various conditions: from maintained to overgrown and unruly.

I decided to enter this alley and head west.  It was not paved, but I could see trails left by tires and it was passable–at first.  After the first few blocks, the weeds began to grow even taller, the overgrowth surrounded me more and I began to hear weird thumping noises from under my car.

I was now on an African safari and I’d like to share another picture from that fabulous excursion with you:

East Central Amazonia

East Central Amazonia

I truly felt like I was off-roading in a tiny Toyota traversing this alley.  The branches from the “trees” on the left managed to attack my car, despite my excellent maneuvering, but the trash can on the right prevented me from avoiding contact.

I left this alleyway as quickly as I could, at least 10 miles per hour, because neighbors spotted me and a Filipino guy driving a Corolla in an alley at 11:30 am may seem suspicious.

Neighbors: We are responsible for the maintenance of our alleys.  Garbage pickup can be difficult and law enforcement has previously refused to patrol the alleys because they are tedious to navigate.

We will be organizing an alley cleanup.  If your neighbor is physically or otherwise unable to mow, weed and maintain that portion of the alley, please offer your help.  Alleys can be safe, but they need to be tended to regularly and we can clean them up faster as a community.

We will announce the first cleanup here and through other ways.

Stay grassy (and classy), Riverside.

    Cervical Radiofrequency Neurotomy, Part 1

So here we are again. I am to be admitted this morning at 8 am for what I hope results in extended relief. The last time was six years ago, so maybe this will be semi-permanent.

At least I’ll be under for the duration of the procedure. And I’ll get some orange juice.

The best part is that I had a great night with my family and will spend the day with them recovering.
